EN 6942 Protective Clothing Heat Radiation Resistant Test Equipment

EN 6942 Protective Clothing Heat Radiation Resistant Test Equipment

Overview
EN 6942 is a European standard that specifies the test method for evaluating the heat radiation resistance of protective clothing materials. This test determines how well a fabric or multilayer material shields against radiant heat, which is crucial for protective gear used in industries such as firefighting, welding, and metalworking.

Test Method
The EN 6942 test involves exposing a material sample to a controlled radiant heat source. The fabric is placed at a specific distance from the heat source, and its thermal behavior is measured based on two testing procedures:

  1. Heat Transfer Assessment (Method A)

    • The material is exposed to radiant heat, and the increase in temperature on the opposite side is recorded using a calorimeter.
    • This method helps determine the insulation properties and thermal protection effectiveness of the fabric.
  2. Visual Alteration Assessment (Method B)

    • The fabric is subjected to radiant heat, and visual changes such as charring, shrinking, or melting are observed.
    • This method evaluates the material’s durability and integrity when exposed to heat.

Protective Clothing Heat Radiation Resistant Test Equipment
The testing equipment used for EN 6942 includes:

  • Radiant Heat Source: Infrared lamps or specialized radiant panels that generate controlled heat radiation.
  • Sample Holder: A frame or clamp to securely position the fabric sample at a specified distance.
  • Calorimeter (for Method A): Measures the heat transmitted through the fabric to assess insulation performance.
  • Temperature Sensors & Data Acquisition System: Monitors and records heat transfer data.
  • Protective Enclosure: Ensures safety by containing heat and preventing external interference.

Applications
EN 6942 testing is essential for manufacturers of:

  • Firefighter suits and gloves
  • Industrial workwear for high-heat environments
  • Foundry and metallurgical protective clothing
  • Heat-resistant textiles used in military and aerospace applications

By ensuring compliance with EN 6942, protective clothing manufacturers can enhance worker safety and meet industry regulations for heat resistance.
